45 Minute Inquiry

Totem Pole's have different meanings depending on where they are made. They can be made by pictures or faces as a result of a local story or major cultural event. They are carved and painted to tell a story. Every Totem Pole tells a different story. Totem pole's are indigenous to Indian/Americans.

In the past boomerang's were made for hunting as well as a sport and entertainment. They are commonly thought of as an Australian icon. When thrown they circle in a perpendicular motion back to where they came from. Boomerang's are indigenous to Australian aboriginal

A toi is Maori creative arts like weaving and carving to celebrate the past and they continue to evolve through fresh inspiration and new materials. Maori arts are indigenous to Maori people.

Whale boots are made of animal skin such as seal skin, whale skin and reindeer skin and their purpose is to help catch whales. Whale boots are indigenous to inuit.

What all these things have in common is they were all traditional to indigenous people.

Tennis Blog Post

Photo
This morning for P.E we played tennis. My Partner was Brooke.
Something that was hard was when our apponent hit it over the over courts. We were hitting the ball to hard so it would reach the other side of the court and give our apponents no room to step back. We Improved on .........

Our teacher Mrs Mills tought us to do forehand hits and backhand hits. We also adapted the rules so you only had to get 3 points to win a game. We had faults and double faults.

Brooke and I won all of our games against the girls but one. We versed them again and regained our title. At the end of P.E Brooke and I versed Mattew and Kyle and they won 5 to 1.

Beyond the Story Competition Entry

It was 1914 and I was boarding the ship. My master lead me into my stall next to a white horse, on the other side there was a chestnut the same breed as me. Days later I found that they were frisky horses. At one point the ship turned and the white stallion dropped. I had watched horses die on the journey to the great World War ahead of us. My master visited and checked me three times a day.

We filed off one by one across two wooden slats. It was shaky but I was just hoping to get across, without falling into the deep, dark, blue water, with no way to get out. After making it across safely we were put into a truck and taken off a training camp to prepare us for the battle.

We had to go days without fresh water and had drills like galloping on sand to strengthen our legs. Our masters were put through running and jumping onto us horses. They learned how to fire a gun and reload the guns with bullets. Finally after weeks of training we were ready to be tacked up and taken into battle.

The soldiers rode us up as dusk struck when it was less likely to be spotted. We had camps where we put our supplies, bullets and other necessities. We split up, as other horses strode off into the night. My master and I galloped up the hill to a makeshift hiding spot on the edge of our side.

Gunshots and screams filled the air. We had been here three weeks and had come so close to death, but we had made it so far; we just kept fighting. Horses I had seen on the voyage had died going down with their master. Some died in agony, some died slow deaths, but all were painful.

I could sense the end was near I just hoped the Turkish were ready to end this. The final stretch. Galloping to safety, the night was dark and my master lay whispering into my ear, “Keep going Bess. We can make it.” We rode past the dead; the stench was horrendous and the blood ran, trickling down the dead bodies.

Another week past and it was clear we had less troops. The death toll was getting higher by the minute and the blood was getting drier in the sun. We started forgetting about the dead as we could not do anything about it.

The call went out that we were to retreat. We had lost the war. Though it was a disappointment it also was a great relief. We could go back to our families and countries and share our stories. It had been an excruciating 2 years.

We didn’t know yet but there was still the battle of getting us home. We were ridden off back to the nearest town but were told none of us horses could go home. Our masters had the big decision of either keeping us, sending us to slaughter or going into torturous families.

Luckily, my master knew a man that could get me back. He had a boat and my master packed me into the ship and I was the only horse to make it back to New Zealand.

I never again saw the horses I went to battle with. ANZAC Day each year is a reminder of the people and horses who sacrificed their lives for their country.

12 Hour Relay

On Friday the 1st of November, we had our yearly 12 hour relay. This year I was a helper/seller in the PTA fundrasier tent. We had to set up and sell things like drinks, lollies, BBQ and lots more.

In the morning we had a group of parents and students that helped to make the filled rolls. They started with cutting the bread next putting in Chesse, Ham, Carrot then we rolled them in glad - rap and boxed them up.

Everyone who wasn't in the team had to do a Fun Walk/Run which is a walk/run where students do as many laps as they can to raise sprit trophey points for their house.
Then we had Top town which is a serious of fun activites e.g. The Gumboot throw, The Sack race, Tug of war, The combat course and more.
Also they got to watch the talent show. There were a group of students performing their talents.

Here are some photos of the day !

Why Do Bees Swarm ?

Why Do Bees Swarm ?

In a colney of bees there can be around 10,000 to 50,000 in a large size and around 1,000 to 2,000 in a average size. In one colney there is one queen and a colney can only fit one queen. When a new queen comes along the other queen takes some bees away and swarms. Queens need lots of reat and stop on a bush or branch.

These picturesare are swarm that were at our school.

Last week I was part of the Multimeadia Aims team. We had to go to all of the events and film them for the Aims youtube channel.

The 5 freedoms we learned about were:

A Most Triumphant Tale: Production Experience

This past week I have had the pleasure of being apart of the school production, A Most Triumphant Tale. It was written by Carol Storey and Jessica Ross.

I was an actor and a dancer. The dancers I was in were Final Countdown and Swan Lake. The costume we had to wear for final countdown were fluro 80's gear and in Swan Lake we had to were a leotard, ballet shoes, tights and a wrap skirt.

We had 5 shows, 2 matinees and 3 night shows. The funny parts in the production for me were when Damian (one of the lead actors) walked in slow motion across the stage like he was in a running race.
Also when the teachers came out in different scenes and made everyone laugh like Mr Applman came out in a tutu and danced in Swan Lake.

The main actors were, Labyrinth, One Dimension, Jimmy Hendrix, Starman, Shakira, Ceelo Green, Usher, Christina, Carson Daly, Mozart, Motown boys, Diana Ross & the Supremes.

I thought the production this year was really interesting, fun and well written.

Camp Happenings

Camp Happenings

Finish each sentence and find an image to go with it

The funniest happening on camp was when we were sleeping in the bush and in the middle of the night _____ needed to go to the toilet in the bush. But she had never peed in the bush before so we she went all of her pee went in her pants and she had to sleep half naked for the rest of the night.

The biggest challenge on camp was when I did the beam because when I was up the ladder and on the beam I was scared that I would fall off the side ( even though I couldn’t). But I made it across and when she let me down REALLY fast I screamed really really loud.

The scariest happening on camp was when Felila was on the tramp and she tried to do a back handspring but when she went back she landed funny on her neck and had to stay in one position for 45 minutes until the ambulance came. This was at around 7 o’clock at night.

The most exhausting moment was when we had to sleep in the bush and the night before I only had 3 hours sleep and that night I woke up and had only 3 4 hours sleep.

The most embarrassing moment was when we were doing stream study and Nicole walked to the other side of the stream and on her way she slipped in and got all of her clothes soaked.

The most dangerous moment was when Steffanie was rafting and she got her injured foot stuck in between some rocks. SHe could get her foot out so one of the parents helped her. Her dad came and picked her up and took her to the hospital and she got crutchers.

3 things I learnt

Firstly I learnt how to make a fire with wood, 2 matches and a piece of newspaper scrunched up.

Secondly I learnt how to shoot a gun and how to shoot at a target.

Lastly I learnt how to use the tramp wisely.

2 things I was surprised about
I was surprised about how someone peed her pants in the bush.
I was surprised about how Matthew said I love you to Mrs Shepard on the top of the beam.

I question I still have
A question I still have is how to find the Nitrite levels of the river ???

Homework Challenge Rimu Tree

Improve your study skills: Research Rimu

- Why is Rimu the best tree in

the school?

Where do you find it
The Rimu tree is found only in New Zealand in Northland down to Stewart Island.

Homework Challenge - Care for Younger Children - Create a game or activity for them to play

This weekend I went to look after a little boy called Will, He is 3 years old. I created an activity using velcro letters and a felt melt. The purpose of the activity was to teach him to recognize letters and start learning some words that are used in his everyday life. Some of he words were Will (his name), Car (his favourite toy) and pig (one of his favourite farm animals).

Will enjoyed the activity but I learnt that 3 year olds don't have long attention span so he did the activity quite quickly as he wants to learn new things and have new and exciting adventures. One of his favourite ames is to play hide and seek.

Hope you enjoyed

Water Cycle Reflection

I have learnt ......
How to make a rap

I have learnt .....
About the water cycle and how it works

I have learnt .......
That you can just copy and paste text into a title

Benefit of working with a partner .......
You can bounce ideas off each other

Benefit of working with a partner .......
Is if you are stuck your partner can tell you not show you how to do it

A difficulty that I had to overcome .......
Was that I had to listen to my partners ideas not just using mine.

Student-Led Conferences Reflection

Student-Led Conferences Reflection

What happened?

My parents and I came to school to talk about what I have done and am doing this year.
I took them though a slideshow that we had prepared in class before the conferences.

What did you like/dislike about it?

I like that we could share our learning in the environment we are in everyday and on our laptops.
I disliked that there was to much time left over.

What feedback did your whanau give you?

They enjoyed seeing the classroom environment that I work in everyday. Also they enjoyed the one on one time with the teacher just talking about my learning. But they would like to have had and extra 5 minutes to talk to the teacher about support strategies that my parents and I can do at home to help my learning.

What would you change if you could?

I would change the time length so you get more time with the teacher and not just the slideshow on the computer. Also I would change having three people in the class to 1 or 2 families.
